In the wake of a natural disaster, a new pandemic is unleashed…

Dr. Mallory Hayes, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) medical investigator, is a committed physician and researcher quietly battling height and air-flight anxiety. When a tsunami devastates the coast of Southern California, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) establishes a camp to house the tens of thousands of people displaced by the disaster, and the Army is brought in to provide medical services.

Mallory is dispatched to the camp by the CDC to prevent the potential spread of disease from contaminated water. What she discovers is far worse than anything she could have imagined—an accelerated HIV-like virus, and a common, everyday microbe, are proving to be extremely deadly.

Particles in the Air is a shockingly realistic tale only an immunologist could write—a tense, high-concept thriller meant to appeal to fans of A.G Riddle, Michael Crichton, Terry Hayes, Richard Preston, and others.

Excerpt

The living room was golden. Just as Henry had imagined. There was a cosy atmosphere, soft carpets and gilded sofas.

The centrepiece was a fireplace, with marble columns. The lamps were jade-coloured and matched nicely to what he presumed were original Chinese vases.

With no windows to be seen, it seemed as though the room was in the centre of the building.

Everything was lit by a soft light. Even the pieces of art hanging on the walls, oil landscapes of foreign countryside scenes, with sheep and streams, had a light upon them.

This seemed to be their domain.

This is where they appeared to be at home.

An exquisite tea set rested on a low table, already prepared, with a wisp of steam coming from the teapot.

They both watched him with attentive eagle eyes.

But this was what he was prepared for.

Dana was standing near the fireplace, her mother seated by the tea.

It was the first time he had met her mother, Sheryl.

She extended her hand, as she got up from the sofa and greeted him nicely. She was polite, in control. From their brief conversation, he understood that she wanted him here, and probably in fact it had been her idea.

That meant she must believe in his abilities: that was good.

Perhaps her situation was too complex for him to understand, and that’s why she felt a pressing need to turn to him for guidance at this moment.

“Thank you very much for coming.” Her coral-painted lips were smiling.

Dana’s demeanour was a different story. She was just watching, quiet. Her eyes fixed on him.

The blood in her veins was boiling, anger rising.

She didn’t know how she felt about having him in the house.

She believed in the cause, as her mother had told her to, but still she didn’t need to be happy about it. To have him here, now, in her living room seemed too personal to her. Like he was invading a part of her she didn’t want him to see. Opening up to him, in this way!

Sure, Henry is such an odd and interesting character, one she was okay to talk to while on the outside, in the wetlands…but now?

Even though he was attractive and all, she didn’t like it.

He sensed her mood.

He mustn’t get riled up by her or get into an argument.

He mustn’t get pulled into this, even though he just as easily wants to.

He must keep in mind the reason he came here.

He was civilised.

But he couldn’t take his eyes off her.

She was beautiful.

Dressed in a red dotted skirt, with a flowing hem ending just above her knees, opaque white stockings and Mary-Jane heels.

Her blouse was cream, with a high neckline ending with a gleaming honey collar, set with rhinestones. Everything was properly buttoned up.

The stones were throwing reflections all around the room and onto her face…fiery silky red hair which was framing it ended in a rich wave just above her shoulders. She had kept it just out of her face, to show off her lovely contours to her best advantage.

She was dressed almost as a schoolgirl, extravagant, but with enough fashion sense to pull it off.

And it suited her very well.

Very different from how he had been used to seeing her in the marshes – yet here she was, in her natural element. Yet underneath still the same girl.

Sheryl had noticed the way he was looking at her right away. She didn’t say anything, what she thought about it she kept to herself. Nevertheless, being herself, she was probably already making a note in her head how she could use his apparent infatuation with her daughter to her benefit.

Mother and daughter both had the same eyes – but the mother’s eyes were deep icy cold, and they were watching him calmly and calculatingly. Unlike Dana who had fire in her blue eyes, or at least when she was watching him. The cloudy grey always moving, changing from light to darker tones: like in his dreams.

“Of course, thank you for inviting me.” He was looking around the room.

The mother, dressed in a soft peach-coloured skirt suit that was also proper and fitting, said, “My daughter told me that you would be able to help with the situation.”

He didn’t say anything.

He was still suspicious about all their intentions.

The vision of the police searching his rooms came back to his mind at that point.

“Yes.”

“I of course believe in your abilities; you don’t have to doubt that,” she continued.

By hearing that, Henry was surprised.

Where does both their sureness of him come from?

Was it just desperation on their part, resulting in their making themselves believe it, wishful thinking?

“Of course, we – I would need more from you. We would need you to find Debra Lee.”

A pause mid-sentence, for a greater effect.

“Tell us what you know. Or what you are able to share with us.”

Dana smirked a little. She was obviously not so convinced. And something was making her nervous.

He must find out what it was.

Her mother was still leading this, steering the helm.

A little taste of the story

After nearly two decades as an accountant, Andrea Gartner had fatally wielded ledger books more times than she cared to remember. She was well acquainted with watching entire lives unravel before her, tears streaming down the faces of grown men annihilated by simple balance sheets charting their financial ruin in ink redder than blood.

Today, she found herself in that painfully familiar spot once more.

She fixed her eyes on the man sitting opposite her, Cam Davis, owner of the largest chain of furniture stores in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the only thing standing between him and the end of his financial life as he knew it. His devil-may-care attitude— the source of so much of his business success—had now left him teetering on the precipice of bankruptcy.

“You have an existential debt problem,” said Andrea.

Telling the cocksure, self-styled Mattress King of South Carolina he was flirting with financial ruin was terrifying, but what Andrea truly feared was him ignoring her dire warnings. She prayed she wasn’t about to watch another client whistle past the graveyard of fiscal reality.

“A what problem?” asked Cam incredulously. “Come on. I sold more furniture last year than my next two competitors combined.”

“I’ve been through your books,” she replied. “Your finances are a house of cards. You’re a hair’s breadth from complete bankruptcy.”

Cam didn’t act like someone about to go broke. Everyone in Columbia knew he was one of the most generous people in the city. Every Christmas, he donated hundreds of mattresses to homeless shelters. When his alma mater, the University of South Carolina, made the playoffs in any sport, he’d give away free sofas to the first fifty customers in his stores the next day. He sponsored Little League teams and 5K races for charity. His heart was big.

His wallet was even bigger and seemingly always open.

She glanced out the window. The Mattress King’s red Ferrari with “MTRSKNG” vanity license plates was parked next to her battered ten-year-old Toyota Camry. His thousand-dollar sports coat and Rolex contrasted sharply with the peeling wallpaper and army surplus furniture of her office. Even his cologne smelled expensive.

“You can’t be serious,” said Cam. “I’ve got twenty stores in Columbia. And twenty more across the rest of the state. If I need cash, I’ll borrow it. No bank is going to turn down a loan application from the Mattress King.”

Here we go again, she thought. He’s not getting it, and I’m not getting through to him.

Excerpt

Frankie set the rifle next to her knee and avoided thorns as she reached in to untangle Diesel. The calf was too panicked. He struggled against her, causing a bruise and a muscle cramp in her forearm. As she pulled back, barbs tore the skin on her wrist. She sucked on the deepest wound while returning to Concho to retrieve a rope and a utility knife from the saddlebag.

Back at Diesel, she wrestled with the calf to loop the rope around his neck. She cut the branches that pinned him to the bush and pulled on the rope. Diesel kicked and fell, then bawled and tried to run. When he realized he was freed from the bush, he stood still, panting and shivering.

Frankie wiped water from her eyes while inspecting a cut in the calf’s left hind leg. It wasn’t so serious to keep him from walking home before she doctored it. With a grunt, she pulled on the rope and led Diesel toward Concho.

As they approached, the horse pranced and snorted like crazy. Frankie caught Concho’s reins and rubbed his nose. “What’s wrong with you?” He stood still long enough for her to secure Diesel’s rope to the saddle horn, then returned to his dance.

His hoof clicked against the thing she had seen sticking up from the ground earlier.

“What did you find?” She knelt and dug dirt and mud away from a bone.

“Concho, did we find an ancient guy’s campsite? Is that what has you so spooked?”

As kids, Frankie and her friends had often daydreamed about finding a nomadic Native American tribe’s village on the ranch. But where they sledded every winter?

“Cool.” She moved more dirt until she could pull the bone from the ground and examine it.

The bone seemed small for a man. Her former friend, Harbin Williams, now a professor in the anthropology department at the University of Wyoming, could confirm her exciting suspicions. But…

She couldn’t force herself to attend his son’s funeral five years ago. Their kids died together in the accident her husband caused. She had isolated herself in her struggle to heal her grief, and she couldn’t face helping her best friends with their recovery.

A growl jolted her attention from the bone to the bared teeth of a gray wolf—ten feet from her.

The rifle lay six feet away, behind the fallen log.

She hopped over the log and took a fighting stance between her animals and the wolf, and then rushed to pull the repellent from under her rain poncho.

The predator stepped closer. Saliva dripped from its huge teeth.

 Excerpt

That first date with Preston checked all the boxes. We strolled and laughed and acted silly. I did see him take a few sips from a silver flask as we went from bar to bar up one side of Sixth and down the other. But he didn’t seem too inebriated and he didn’t try to force me to drink, either.

Halfway through the night, we morphed into a large group. He wasn’t kidding about some of his friends joining us. We seemed to pick up one or two more at each place we stopped. They were all high or drunk. I didn’t see anyone sober other than us—well, me. Preston may have been sober, but each bar was so loud and jam-packed, conversation became more and more impossible. All I had to go on was how well he could walk.

Some of our group couldn’t even do that.

Lines of people snaked away down the packed sidewalks and away from the entrances to every place that featured music. The whole street throbbed with sound and the entire downtown area felt wrapped in laughter and drenched in lights.

Later, he wanted us to go to the lake to go skinny dipping with his friends. But that wasn’t me. Not at all. “Please take me home,” I said. But he refused.

Come on,” he said. “It’ll be fun.”

When I refused, he turned on the road leading there anyway.

I insisted he let me out.

He slowed and stopped, calling my bluff.

I took a deep breath, stepped out, and started walking back the way we had come. Though my outside appearance was calm, my insides were like waves white-capping near the shore. It was a long way back to the main road. I hoped and prayed someone I knew would come along and give me a ride. It wouldn’t be Joanna, though. She and Antonio were doing the Zombie Walk again. This time there would be a prize for the best look. How I wished I’d gone with them.

When Preston realized I wasn’t bluffing, he turned the car around and drove alongside me as I strode down the shoulder of the road, arms crossed over my chest.

I could hear him attempting to apologize, but this time his words fell into the gap between us like pebbles dropped into a dry well. “I was only joking,” he said. “You know I would never make you do anything you didn’t want.”

CHAPTER SEVENTY-TWO

1915 Hours, Friday, October 30, 1942

Lysekil Harbor, Lysekil, Sweden

Conor and Emily shared a wooden crate in the back of the truck. Eve and
Gunnar did the same. They had been on the road for ten minutes when the
truck made a right turn and pulled to a stop. Conor pushed the rear canvas
flap aside and saw that they had arrived at a gas station. Bobby came to the
back of the truck.

“The driver said that he has to fill up for his deliveries tomorrow
morning. That’s his routine. It won’t take long.”

“Long enough for a phone call?”

“I guess.”

Conor hopped down and headed inside the station’s office. There
wasn’t anyone inside, so he laid a few krona on the desk, dialed the
Grand Hotel, and asked for Gus Karlson.

“Are you there yet?” Karlson asked.

“Close. Maybe another fifteen, twenty minutes. Any fallout from our
fishing trip?”

“Quite a lot. Tolberg visited us. The C Bureau is pretty grumpy. The
body count at the Andersson house was out of hand, as far as they’re
concerned. They say that quite a few people from all three legations are
going to be sent home. I might be one of them.”

“Wait, you said three legations?”

“There were three dead Russians at the house, along with one
German.”

“How did the Russians get involved?”

“They have eyes and ears everywhere, Conor.”

A man in a grease-smeared coverall walked into the office through a rear
door. He held his hands up as if to say, What the hell?

Conor pointed at the coins on the desk.

The man shrugged and sat down.

“Could they have been a competing buyer for Lind’s
intelligence?” Conor believed that, once the war was over, the shotgun
marriage that was the relationship between the Americans, Brits, and Soviets
wouldn’t last long.

“Wouldn’t put it past them.”

“Any sign of Eklof or Stuben?”

“Actually, they have been noticeably absent of late.”

“That’s not necessarily good news.” Conor saw Bobby
waving at him from the cab of the truck. “Gotta get going, Gus. Keep
your head down.”

“I could say the same thing to you. By the way, you taking good care
of Ramsay’s Volvo?”

Conor dropped the phone in the cradle, gave the man a quick nod, and walked
out to the truck. Conor stepped up into the cab and sat next to Bobby. He
wanted to study the lay of the land as they made their approach to the
harbor area.

Less than fifteen minutes later, they were driving along a road that ran
beside a long wharf. The dockside was lit by a sparse number of
streetlights. Three fishing trawlers were tied up along the wharf, all of
their pilothouses lit up and their navigation lights on. Conor could see a
few men washing down the decks with hoses. The driver pulled into a dirt lot
adjacent to a long, three-story warehouse. At the near end was a sign for a
fishmonger, most likely the driver’s boss. Farther down the quay,
Conor could make out the shape of a motor gun boat tied up close to a single
railcar. According to the extraction plan, it was motor gun boat 622, the
Fairmile D. The Dog Boat. The same one that he and Donovan saw demonstrating
high-speed maneuvers in the Thames. All armaments were removed from sight,
and extra fuel was supposed to be on board. It was to fly the red ensign of
a merchantman, crewed by trawler men from Hull. The captain, a man called
Peter Scott, was former Royal Navy.

A sedan parked near the gun boat caught his attention. Conor couldn’t
make out who or how many people were inside, but he knew they were enjoying
cigarettes given the smoke drifting out the open windows.

The driver of the truck cut the engine, placed the keys in the visor, and
said something to Bobby.

“What’s up?” Conor asked.

“Our friend here is going home to his family. He says we can stay in
the truck as long as we like.”

Conor looked at his watch: 1934 hours. “Tell him we’ll be
moving on in a few minutes. And thank him for the ride.”

The driver jumped down from the cab and headed up a sloping road toward the
center of town.

“What now?” Bobby asked.

“Do you see that car parked down near the railcar and the gun
boat?”

“Yeah.”

“Not sure who they are, but the chances that they’re keeping an
eye on our transportation out of Sweden is good. The problem is, they
can’t see us board or we’ll never get out of here.”

“So do we wait them out?”

“No time for that.” Conor got out and went to the rear of the
truck.

Emily was sitting on the crate, gun held loosely in her lap. Eve and Gunnar
were dozing. Gunnar’s hands were still bound behind his back.

“Emily, I’m going to drive us down to the dock where the gun
boat is tied up. As soon as I stop, get moving and board.”

“Understood.” At that moment, Eve and Gunnar woke up.

“And for good measure, get the gag back in Gunnar’s
mouth.”

Conor walked around to the driver’s-side door, jumped up, started the
truck, and pulled out of the lot.

“You going to tell me what your plan is at any point?” Bobby
asked.

“Once I get rid of our visitors, we board the boat. Not
complicated.”

Bobby said something, but Conor couldn’t make it out over the sound
of the truck’s engine. He kept the truck in first gear as he set it on
a direct path to the rear of the sedan. The truck’s headlights
revealed two men turning around in their seats to watch the truck coming
toward them. Conor glanced over at the motor gun boat and saw someone in the
pilothouse, as well as a plume of dark exhaust spouting from the
boat’s stern.

Ten feet from the sedan, the passenger-side door opened, and he punched the
gas. The force of metal on metal closed the door. The truck picked up some
speed as it began to push the sedan toward the end of the wharf, but
progress slowed as it fought the braking power of the car. More gas and the
sedan and truck neared the end of the quay. The sedan balanced on the
wharf’s edge momentarily before tumbling into the harbor.

“Let’s go.”

Conor jumped out of the cab and rushed to the back of the truck. Emily was
on the ground, helping Eve jump down. Gunnar was right behind her. With the
truck engine silent, the throaty sound of the motor gun boat’s engines
filled the night. Conor was last to board.

“Get them below, Emily. Bobby, tell the captain that now would be a
good time to shove off. Those two guys might be good swimmers.”

Conor heard the car before he saw it, but the headlights quickly found him
on the aft section of the deck. The car skidded to a stop under a
streetlight. The driver got out, then the passenger. Eklof.

Conor reached for his Colt, but before he could raise it, Eklof fired off
two rounds. A deckhand on the foredeck tossed the last line into the water
and took cover behind the craft’s superstructure. As the gun boat
started to drift from the quay, Conor fired two rounds, shattering the
window of the door that Eklof was using as cover. The driver began firing as
well, rounds whizzing over Conor’s head. Bobby and Emily started
firing from the bridge, and soon the driver fell to the ground behind his
door.

As the gun boat pulled forward, Eklof sprinted toward the stern. Conor
pulled the trigger of his Colt, but the gun’s slide snapped back,
signaling an empty magazine. He dropped the gun on the deck as Eklof leaped
and landed on the aft deck, losing his balance due to the accelerating boat,
which, luckily, kept him from firing accurately. Before he could regain his
balance, Conor raced toward him. Jumping, he planted both feet into
Eklof’s chest. Eklof’s pistol flew into the air and landed in
the boat’s prop wash, while Conor landed on his back, knocking the air
from his lungs.

Eklof struggled to his feet, also gasping for air. He charged Conor, who
had barely gotten to his feet, and landed on him. Eklof wrapped his arms
around his chest, pinning Conor’s upper arms against his body. Eklof
landed one headbutt, then another. Conor’s vision blurred. He raised
his right arm and, before Eklof could launch another headbutt, grabbed the
man’s ear and ripped it from his head; blood gushed, covering
Conor’s hand, and Eklof let out a scream as he rolled off Conor and
grabbed the side of his head. Conor, his head pounding from the headbutts,
rolled on top of Eklof, grabbed his hair, and started pounding his head on
the deck.

“You. Don’t. Ever. Hit. A. Woman,” Conor screamed. Each
word was punctuated with Eklof’s head slamming into the deck. Blood
pooled under it, and his eye patch had come loose. The eye socket looked
like a dried peach pit.

Conor heard Eklof’s short, hoarse breaths, and he rolled off the man,
grabbed his legs, and dragged him toward the stern, letting his body slip
into the churning water with no fanfare, no emotion.

When Conor turned, he noticed a commotion on the port side of the
wheelhouse. Emily was bent over a body. He ran forward, the motor gun boat
picking up speed. When he reached Emily, he saw that she was tending to a
wounded man. Bobby Heugle.

Read an Excerpt from Book 1: Steel Force

The driver pointed a pistol at Steel and tossed a black hood onto his lap. “Put the brief on the seat. Now. Then hands in your lap.”

Steel complied.

The driver kept talking. “See the handcuffs by your feet? Put them on your left ankle and right wrist, then pull on the hood and sit on your left hand. Keep your head between your knees.”

Steel leaned over his knees and saw that the handcuffs were attached to a very short, thick chain bolted into the flooring. He put them on his wrist and ankle, and then pulled on the hood and sat on his left hand. The short chain forced him to remain bent over. He was aware of the tall man getting in and felt the man’s pistol pushed into his ribs.

The Cadillac took off. The whole thing took ten seconds. When they exited the lot, Steel sensed the Cadillac taking a left, heading back to Richmond.

“Please, we don’t know anything.” Grove sounded panicked. “Take the briefcase. I haven’t even seen the file yet. Then you can let us go. Please.”

The driver said, “Get the brief up here.”

Steel was aware of the tall man passing it up front, and heard it click open.

“Hey, bonus,” said Charlie.

Steel knew Charlie had found his spare Glock.

“Quit playing around,” said the driver.

“Hey, Rusack, mellow out,” said Charlie. “We got it, don’t we?”

“I have a wife and kids,” said Grove.

“Ain’t that sweet,” said Charlie.

“Shut up and get ready,” said Rusack.

“For what?” Grove sounded hoarse.

Charlie said, “Hey, Rusack, should I tell him what we’re going to do?”

“What are you going to do?” Grove’s voice broke.

A Guest Post by Morgan Dun-Campbell

The Post

It’s tricky to pinpoint how I came up with the idea for this novel, because I don’t really find that ideas are triggered by external circumstances – they almost seem to come from nowhere. In fact, the premise for the novel I am currently working on actually came to me in a dream, which has never, ever happened before. I woke up, thought it was a really fascinating idea, and quickly jotted it down. In terms of The Girl on Camera, I came up with the earliest version of it several years ago, when I was just thirteen. If anything, I think some of my most imaginative novel ideas have come from this time period, and I do wonder if my current ones are as exciting! Over the years, I’ve revisited this premise between working on other projects, because I still think it’s fairly unique, and applicable. There is a certain hook to it.
I’ll try my best to identify exactly how the idea came about. I’ve always been interested in conflict, and how characters with opposing personalities might interact with one another. For a couple of years in my early teens, my favourite film was The Breakfast Club, so this may have been influential! I also know that before I started The Girl on Camera, which at that time was called Camp 101 (a reference to Room 101 from 1984), I began a novel from five different viewpoints, who all had contrasting personas – one of them was a movie star, one of them was a recluse, etc. – and they all ended up trapped in a supermarket, on the same day. I think they were hostages in a robbery, and they all had different reasons for being there at that particular time. The movie star was, I think, visiting the town temporarily and staying in a hotel, her bodyguard was in his room, so she’d ventured to the supermarket alone. So, I would say that this novel about the people in the supermarket inspired The Girl on Camera, in part. The original version of The Girl on Camera was also much more focused on the day to day life of Rory (or Anna, as she was called at the time), there were originally several chapters set in her office at work.
In terms of reality TV, when I was younger, I went through a phase of being fascinated by the concept of being famous, and of celebrity status. This was when my other greatest passion, second to writing, was acting. I’d rehearse monologues from well-known movies, go to auditions, and was a member of the ITV Television Workshop. I’ve attended a few casting calls over the years, too – including Daisy Ridley’s part in the new Star Wars’ movies! However, I’m not really interested in any of that anymore – if anything, I think being famous seems like it would be quite scary. Particularly losing your privacy so drastically. So, I suppose my interest in fame, my fascination with conflicting personalities, and a random spark of imagination, was how I came up with the idea for The Girl on Camera.

And here’s information about the book.
