About the Author

Stella Atrium is a cynical septuagenarian. She has spent a lifetime exploring female characters for real world reactions to obstacles.  Often pushed into submissive and non-verbal roles, women really live in a world of networking among aunties, cousins, wives of husbands, convenient friends and neighbors.  This rich world is largely unexplored.

“I grew up with all brothers, so I knew about women from stories and from school.  What I found at school wasn’t anything like in the stories, so I set out to learn why.”

Two unlikely companions search for a kidnapped wizard in this fantasy novel.

The land of Armera is orbited by the moons of Vesti, colonized long ago by wizards escaping the planet’s terrible wars. Armera survived these conflicts, and benevolent wizards have returned to the planet, forming a Wizards Council to broker relations between the two civilizations. But now, DeMartize—Vesti’s greatest wizard—has been kidnapped by the evil twins Kal and Sak, and the colony blames the council. With war threatening, the high wizard Mernes the Mad brings together his 14-year-old apprentice, Peterzik, and Cedric, a 14-year-old “hero rescuer and thief,” for the job of saving DeMartize. Peterzik’s knowledge and Cedric’s accomplished thievery make them the perfect pair.

Guided by a vision from the council, the two set out on their long and dangerous journey across challenging terrain. They’re beset by many daunting creatures to fight, negotiate with, or trick to get past; these include the Snow King, a fire dragon, a water monster, and a kingdom of bats. And the duo will still have to defeat the powerful and wicked twins, hoping to rescue DeMartize before war is declared.

Deserting his regiment in the aftermath of an injury, Torrent is just trying to get home to his fiancée without being robbed or arrested. Reporting the illegal saltpeter mine he finds on his return might be valuable enough for the army to overlook his truancy, perhaps even grant him a pension. If he’s willing to betray Molly to make that report.

For Molly, chemistry has always been more useful than magic, especially now that supplying the opposing side with gunpowder is the only thing keeping her from being ousted from her own farm. After two years apart, Molly knows it’s foolish to trust Torrent with either the mine or her heart. Unfortunately, Torrent’s not the only one interested in Coriander Hollow.

Between Torrent’s desertion and her own illegal mine, Molly has to decide whose secrets she’s willing to protect and how far she’s willing to go to protect them. And Molly hadn’t counted on Coriander Hollow having secrets of its own…

This is an adult fantasy novel, that might appeal to readers of Genevieve Cogman, Naomi Novik or Katherine Addison. It’s historical fantasy-ish (I describe it as ‘steampunk on a farm’), a little bit Cherie Priest meets Cold Mountain.

Virtual Book Tour–House of the Twelfth Planet

TourBanner_Scion Book III House of the 12th Planet

Here’s a bit about this story setting–

Thelona is a planet stuck in time.  Nominally ruled by a council of noble houses headed by a Highest, it has been essentially swallowed whole by a space-going merchant guild whose actual rule is enforced by a Mercenary Corps.  By design, the planet as a whole remains trapped at an arrested state of development while “spacers” exploit it for every resource.  Among these resources are slaves, on whose sale and transport the Aircos of the Guild make a tidy profit.  While the residents can dream of the stars, they can never reach them, and if the usual process by which the guild strips and deserts planets applies, they will be left in ruin.

And a short blurb about the story

To whom does Lela owe her loyalty:  her own people or the Thelonian Lord who loves her?

Want to read more? Here’s an excerpt.

Roger remained, fingers tented, studying his viewscreen at some length after Dervin had gone back to his own office. The Governor had learned to trust his assistant’s judgment. Dervin might be somewhat quick to judge the weak spots in any immigration request, but he had been proven right more than once. Roger did not always make a habit of reviewing such requests so carefully, leaving those matters largely to his assistant. But he was studying the medical records of a woman who had no idea he had them. He doubted she even knew what they were or that they had been obtained while she lay in stasis. That was simply standard procedure, but in this instance, they had been of note.

Her Lord was, in all probability, a firebrand. But that did not so much concern Roger. There were as yet no political divisions to be exploited in his tiny domain. If that Merc energy could be channeled in a positive direction, Caius of the House of Bardin could prove to be an asset.

If, on the other hand, he had inflicted the damages Roger was seeing…well, that was another matter. No woman would be treated that way while he was Governor.

Read an Excerpt

Swimming along, Velvet continued to send a friendly wave to every creature she saw. She rounded the corner of a huge coral reef and saw a murky, shaded part of the coral ahead. If she had a middle name, it would be Curious. Velvet thought nothing of swimming into the darkened water.

A naked man was swimming furiously to the surface, struggling and thrashing in a panic.

He thinks he’s drowning.

If his panic didn’t give him away as a visitor to the Dreaming, his energy did. She didn’t know many visitors, but she had met more than anyone else she knew. Why did she find visitors so compelling? She often wondered about that.

Once, she had shared a romance with a visitor. His name was Joe, and he was sixteen years old at the time. For one whole summer, that was what he called it, they spent all of his time in the Dreaming together. Then Joe admitted to her that he felt weird about having an invisible girlfriend, and they stopped seeing one another in that way. They were friends now. He’d long since grown up and was happily married to a new visitor to the Dreaming. A woman named Dana.

Velvet stopped her reverie and flashed into action, quickly pushing the stranger to what would appear to be a surface to him. She held him while he gulped air, and spurted water from his mouth at the same time.

The stranger turned wild eyes to Velvet. He scanned her from head to tail, and then started racing away from her.

“What?” Velvet called out sarcastically. “Was it something I said? Most people have to know me awhile before they swim away at high speed.” As soon as she said it, she felt terrible and her compassion kicked her butt. She called out, “I’m sorry. I hope you’re okay.” The visitor never looked back.
